Battle of Hunayn & the Lesson of Pride
غزوة حنين
Weeks after the Conquest of Mecca, the Muslim army of 12,000 was ambushed and nearly routed. Some said: "We will not be defeated today by reason of our numbers." This pride led to the initial rout — until the Prophet ﷺ rallied them by name.
The Account
After the Conquest
Just weeks after the Conquest of Mecca, the Hawazin and Thaqif tribes — fearing they would be next — pre-empted by mobilising their forces under Malik ibn Awf al-Nasri. He brought not only warriors but their families, wealth, and livestock — to motivate his men to fight or face complete loss.
The Muslim army marched out with 12,000 — 10,000 veterans from Madinah plus 2,000 newly-entered Meccans. Some Muslims, struck by their own numbers, said:
"We will not be defeated today by reason of our numbers!"
These words displeased the Prophet ﷺ.
The Ambush
The valley of Hunayn is narrow and deep. Malik ibn Awf positioned his archers on both sides of the valley under cover of darkness. As the Muslim vanguard entered at dawn, a massive volley of arrows rained down from all sides simultaneously.
Confusion and panic spread. The vanguard turned and fled — into the main body of the army — causing a cascade of retreat. Even veterans ran. For a brief, terrible moment, the Prophet ﷺ stood nearly alone.
He called out: "I am the Prophet, no lie. I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib." He urged his mule forward into the enemy. His uncle Abbas RA — who had a loud voice — called out on his command:
"O Ansar! O people of the Ridwan Pledge! O people of the Samura tree!"
They heard, turned back, and dismounted. Fighting resumed. The enemy was routed.
The Distribution of Spoils
The spoils of Hunayn were immense — 6,000 captives, 24,000 camels, 40,000 sheep. The Prophet ﷺ distributed them generously to the newly-converted Meccan leaders (al-mu'allafat qulubuhum — those whose hearts were to be won).
Some Ansar felt overlooked. The Prophet ﷺ gathered them and said:
"O Ansar — did I not find you misguided and Allah guided you through me? Did I not find you poor and Allah enriched you through me? Did I not find you enemies and Allah united your hearts through me?"
They said: "Yes — Allah and His Messenger are most generous."
He continued: "Will you not answer me, O Ansar?"
They said: "What should we say, O Messenger of Allah? All grace and favour belongs to Allah and His Messenger."
He said: "By Allah — if all of mankind went one way and the Ansar went another, I would go the way of the Ansar. O Allah, have mercy on the Ansar, their children, and their children's children."
They wept until their beards were wet.

"Hunayn was a divine lesson placed immediately after the greatest victory. The moment the Muslims said "we cannot be defeated by reason of our numbers," Allah showed them the exact opposite. This is the Sunnah of Allah with those who rely on means rather than the Giver of means."
Zad al-Ma'ad, Vol. 3, Hunayn chapter
"The Prophet's ﷺ words to the Ansar at the distribution are among the most moving in all of Seerah. He reminded them that the Muhajirun take the sheep and camels while the Ansar take the Messenger of Allah home with them — a reminder that spiritual proximity is the greater gift."
Al-Bidaya wa'l-Nihaya, Vol. 4
Key Lessons
- ◆Numbers and strength are not guarantees of victory — the lesson of Hunayn directly follows the Conquest to prevent arrogance
- ◆The Prophet's ﷺ personal courage — standing his ground on a mule when 12,000 fled — is one of the greatest acts of bravery recorded
- ◆"Al-mu'allafat qulubuhum" (winning hearts through generosity) is a legitimate category of Islamic leadership — not bribery but wisdom
- ◆The Prophet's ﷺ words to the Ansar show that loyalty, service, and spiritual contribution are more honoured than material gain
