Allâh, it is He Who has subjected to you the sea, that ships may sail through it by His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may be thankful.

Hell is ahead of them; and all that they may have gained [in this world] shall be of no avail whatever to them, and neither shall any of those things which, instead of God, they have come to regard as their protectors: for awesome suffering awaits them.

خدا ہی تو ہے جس نے دریا کو تمہارے قابو کردیا تاکہ اس کے حکم سے اس میں کشتیاں چلیں اور تاکہ تم اس کے فضل سے (معاش) تلاش کرو اور تاکہ شکر کرو

يخبر تعالى بفضله على عباده وإحسانه إليهم بتسخير البحر لسير المراكب والسفن بأمره وتيسيره، { لِتَبْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ } بأنواع التجارات والمكاسب، { وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ } الله تعالى فإنكم إذا شكرتموه زادكم من نعمه وأثابكم على شكركم أجرا جزيلا.

الله سبحانه وتعالى هو الذي سخَّر لكم البحر؛ لتجري السفن فيه بأمره، ولتبتغوا من فضله بأنواع التجارات والمكاسب، ولعلكم تشكرون ربكم على تسخيره ذلك لكم، فتعبدوه وحده، وتطيعوه فيما يأمركم به، وينهاكم عنه.

يذكر تعالى نعمه على عبيده فيما سخر لهم من البحر لتجري الفلك وهي السفن فيه بأمره تعالى فإنه هو الذي أمر البحر بحملها ولتبتغوا من فضله أي في المتاجر والمكاسب ولعلكم تشكرون أي على حصول المنافع المجلوبة إليكم من الأقاليم النائية والآفاق القاصية.

The Subjugation of the Sea, etc., is among Allah's Signs Allah the Exalted mentions some of the favors He gave to His servants, such as subjecting the sea for their service, لِتَجْرِىَ الْفُلْكُ فِيهِ بِأَمْرِهِ (that ships may sail through the sea by His command,) i.e., of Allah the Exalted, Who ordered the sea to carry ships, وَلِتَبْتَغُواْ مِن فَضْلِهِ (and that you may seek of His bounty,) in commercial and business transactions, وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ (and that you may be thankful.) for earning various provisions brought to you from far away provinces and distant areas through the sea. Allah the Exalted said, وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمْ مَّا فِى السَّمَـوَتِ وَمَا فِى الاٌّرْضِ (And has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth;) the stars, the mountains, the seas, the rivers and all that you use for your benefit; these are all from His favor, kindness and bounty. Allah's statement next, جَمِيعاً مِّنْهُ (it is all from Him.) Alone without partners in giving any of it. Allah the Exalted said in another Ayah, وَمَا بِكُم مِّن نِّعْمَةٍ فَمِنَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ إِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الضُّرُّ فَإِلَيْهِ تَجْـَرُونَ (And whatever of blessings you have, it is from Allah. Then, when harm touches you unto Him you cry aloud for help.) (16:53) Ibn Jarir recorded that Al-`Awfi reported that Ibn `Abbas said about Allah's statement, وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمْ مَّا فِى السَّمَـوَتِ وَمَا فِى الاٌّرْضِ جَمِيعاً مِّنْهُ (And has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth; it is all from Him.) "Everything is from Allah, and that is a Name from His Names. So it all comes from Him without rivals to dispute His authority; surely, this fact is completely certain." Allah said. إِنَّ فِى ذلِكَ لآيَـتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ (Verily, in it are signs for a people who think deeply.) The Command to be Patient with the Harm of Idolators Allah's saying; قُل لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ يَغْفِرُواْ لِلَّذِينَ لاَ يَرْجُونَ أَيَّامَ اللَّهِ (Say to the believers to forgive those who hope not for the Days of Allah,) means, let the believers forgive the disbelievers and endure the harm that they direct against them. In the beginning of Islam, Muslims were ordered to observe patience in the face of the oppression of the idolators and the People of the Scriptures so that their hearts may incline towards Islam. However, when the disbelievers persisted in stubbornness, Allah legislated for the believers to fight in Jihad. Statements of this meaning were collected from `Abdullah bin `Abbas and Qatadah. Mujahid said about Allah's statement, لاَ يَرْجُونَ أَيَّامَ اللَّهِ (those who hope not for the Days of Allah,) "They do not appreciate Allah's favors." Allah said, لِيَجْزِىَ قَوْماً بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْسِبُونَ (that He may recompense people, according to what they have earned.) meaning, if the believers forgive the disbelievers in this life, Allah will still punish the disbelievers for their evil in the Hereafter. Allah's statement next, مَنْ عَمِلَ صَـلِحاً فَلِنَفْسِهِ وَمَنْ أَسَآءَ فَعَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ تُرْجَعُونَ (Whosoever does a good deed, it is for himself, and whosoever does evil, it is against (himself). Then to your Lord you will be made to return.) meaning, you will all return to Allah on the Day of Resurrection, when you and your actions will be displayed before Him. Then, He will recompense you for your deeds, good for good and evil for evil. وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا بَنِى إِسْرَءِيلَ الْكِتَـبَ وَالْحُكْمَ وَالنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقْنَـهُمْ مِّنَ الطَّيِّبَـتِ وَفَضَّلْنَـهُمْ عَلَى الْعَـلَمينَ - وَءاتَيْنَـهُم بَيِّنَـتٍ مِّنَ الاٌّمْرِ فَمَا اخْتَلَفُواْ إِلاَّ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ بَغْياً بَيْنَهُمْ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقْضِى بِيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَـمَةِ فِيمَا كَانُواْ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ - ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَـكَ عَلَى شَرِيعَةٍ مِّنَ الاٌّمْرِ فَاتَّبِعْهَا وَلاَ تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَآءَ الَّذِينَ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ

اللہ تعالیٰ کے ابن آدم پر احسانات اللہ تعالیٰ اپنی نعمتیں بیان فرما رہا ہے کہ اسی کے حکم سے سمندر میں اپنی مرضی کے مطابق سفر طے کرتے ہوئے بڑی بڑی کشتیاں مال اور سواریوں سے لدی ہوئی ادھر سے ادھر لے جاتے ہو تجارتیں اور کمائی کرتے ہو۔ یہ اس لئے بھی ہے کہ تم اللہ کا شکر بجا لاؤ نفع حاصل کر کے رب کا احسان مانو پھر اس نے آسمان کی چیز جیسے سورج چاند ستارے اور زمین کی چیز جیسے پہاڑ نہریں اور تمہارے فائدے کی بیشمار چیزیں تمہارے لئے مسخر کردی، یہ سب اس کا فضل و احسان انعام و اکرام ہے اور اسی ایک کی طرف سے ہے، جیسے ارشاد ہے آیت (وَمَا بِكُمْ مِّنْ نِّعْمَةٍ فَمِنَ اللّٰهِ ثُمَّ اِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الضُّرُّ فَاِلَيْهِ تَجْــــَٔــرُوْنَ 53؀ۚ) 16۔ النحل :53) ، یعنی تمہارے پاس جو نعمتیں ہیں سب اللہ کی دی ہوئی ہیں اور ابھی بھی سختی کے وقت تم اسی کی طرف گڑگڑاتے ہو۔ حضرت ابن عباس فرماتے ہیں ہر چیز اللہ ہی کی طرف سے ہے اور یہ نام اس میں نام ہے اس کے ناموں میں سے پس یہ سب اس کی جانب سے ہے کوئی نہیں جو اس سے چھینا چھپٹی یا جھگڑا کرسکے ہر ایک اس یقین پر ہے کہ وہ اسی طرح ہے ایک شخص نے حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر سے سوال کیا کہ مخلوق کس چیز سے بنائی گئی ہے ؟ آپ نے فرمایا نور سے اور آگ سے اور اندھیرے سے اور مٹی سے اور کہا جاؤ ابن عباس کو اگر دیکھو تو ان سے بھی دریافت کرلو۔ اس نے آپ سے بھی پوچھا یہی جواب پایا پھر فرمایا واپس ان کے پاس جاؤ اور پوچھا کہ یہ سب کس چیز سے پیدا کئے گئے ؟ وہ لوٹا اور سوال کیا تو آپ نے یہی سوال کیا تو آپ نے یہی آیت پڑھ کر سنائی۔ یہ اثر غریب ہے۔ اور ساتھ ہی منکر بھی ہے غور و فکر کی عادت رکھنے والوں کے لئے اس میں بھی بہت نشانیاں ہیں پھر فرماتا ہے کہ صبر و تحمل کی عادت ڈالو منکرین قیامت کی کڑوی کسیلی سن لیا کرو، مشرک اور اہل کتاب کی ایذاؤں کو برداشت کرلیا کرو۔ یہ حکم شروع اسلام میں تھا لیکن بعد میں جہاد اور جلا وطنی کے احکام نازل ہوئے۔ اللہ کے دنوں کی امید نہیں رکھتے یعنی اللہ کی نعمتوں کے حاصل کرنے کی کوشش نہیں کرتے۔ پھر فرمایا کہ ان سے تم چشم پوشی کرو ان کے اعمال کی سزا خود ہم انہیں دیں گے اسی لئے اس کے بعد ہی فرمایا کہ تم سب اسی کی طرف لوٹائے جاؤ گے اور ہر نیکی بدی کی جزا سزا پاؤ گے۔ واللہ سبحانہ وتعالیٰ اعلم۔
