"Indeed we were promised this - we and our forefathers before (us), verily, these are nothing but tales of ancients."

Nay – who is it that creates [all life] in the first instance, and then brings it forth anew? And who is it that provides you with sustenance out of heaven and earth?

یہ وعدہ ہم سے اور ہمارے باپ دادا سے پہلے سے ہوتا چلا آیا ہے (کہاں کا اُٹھنا اور کیسی قیامت) یہ تو صرف پہلے لوگوں کی کہانیاں ہیں

{ لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا هَذَا } أي: البعث { نَحْنُ وَآبَاؤُنَا مِنْ قَبْلُ } أي: فلم يجئنا ولا رأينا منه شيئا. { إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ } أي: قصصهم وأخبارهم التي تقطع بها الأوقات وليس لها أصل ولا صدق فيها.فانتقل في الإخبار عن أحوال المكذبين بالإخبار أنهم لا يدرون متى وقت الآخرة ثم الإخبار بضعف علمهم فيها ثم الإخبار بأنه شك ثم الإخبار بأنه عمى ثم الإخبار بإنكارهم لذلك واستبعادهم وقوعه. أي: وبسبب هذه الأحوال ترحل خوف الآخرة من قلوبهم فأقدموا على معاصي الله وسهل عليهم تكذيب الحق والتصديق بالباطل واستحلوا الشهوات على القيام بالعبادات فخسروا دنياهم وأخراهم.

لقد وُعدنا هذا البعث نحن وآباؤنا مِن قبل، فلم نر لذلك حقيقة ولم نؤمن به، ما هذا الوعد إلا مما سطَّره الأولون من الأكاذيب في كتبهم وافتروه.

أى ما زلنا نسمع بهذا نحن وآباؤنا ولا نرى له حقيقة ولا وقوعا وقولهم "إن هذا إلا أساطير الأولين" يعنون ما هذا الوعد بإعادة الأبدان "إلا أساطير الأولين" أي أخذه قوم عمن قبلهم من كتب يتلقاه بعض عن بعض وليس له حقيقة.

Scepticism about the Resurrection and Its Refutation Allah tells us about the idolators who deny the Resurrection, considering it extremely unlikely that bodies will be re-created after they have become bones and dust. Then He says: لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا هَـذَا نَحْنُ وَءَابَآؤُنَا مِن قَبْلُ (Indeed we were promised this -- we and our forefathers before,) meaning, `we and our forefathers have been hearing this for a long time, but in reality, we have never seen it happen.' إِنْ هَـذَآ إِلاَّ أَسَـطِيرُ الاٌّوَّلِينَ (verily, these are nothing but tales of ancients.) the promises that bodies will be restored are إِلاَّ أَسَـطِيرُ الاٌّوَّلِينَ (nothing but tales of ancients.) meaning that they were taken by the people who came before us from books which were handed down from one to the other, but they have no basis in reality. Responding to their thoughts of disbelief and their belief that there would be no Resurrection, Allah said, قُلْ (Say) `O Muhammad, to these people,' سِيرُواْ فِى الاٌّرْضِ فَاْنظُرُواْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـقِبَةُ الْمُجْرِمِينَ (Travel in the land and see how has been the end of the criminals. ) meaning, those who denied the Messengers and their message of the Resurrection and other matters. See how the punishment and vengeance of Allah struck them and how Allah saved from among them the noble Messengers and the believers who followed them. This will be an indication of the truth of the Message brought by the Messengers. Then, to comfort the Prophet , Allah says: وَلاَ تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ (And grieve you not over them,) meaning, `but do not feel sorry for them or kill yourself with regret for them,' وَلاَ تَكُن فِى ضَيْقٍ مِّمَّا يَمْكُرُونَ (nor be straitened because of what they plot.) means, `because they plot against you and reject what you have brought, for Allah will help and support you, and cause your religion to prevail over those who oppose you and stubbornly resist you in the east and in the west.'

حیات ثانی کے منکر یہاں یہ بیان ہو رہا ہے کہ منکرین قیامت کی سمجھ میں اب تک بھی نہیں آیا کہ مرنے اور سڑ گل جانے کے بعد مٹی اور راکھ ہوجانے کے بعد ہم دوبارہ کیسے پیدا کئے جائیں گے ؟ وہ اس پر سخت متعجب ہیں۔ کہتے ہیں مدتوں سے اگلے زمانوں سے یہ سنتے چلے آتے ہیں لیکن ہم نے تو کسی کو مرنے کے بعد جیتا ہوا دیکھا نہیں۔ سنی سنائی باتیں ہیں انہوں نے اپنے اگلوں سے انہوں نے اپنے سے پہلے والوں سے سنیں ہم تک پہنچیں لیکن سب عقل سے دور ہیں۔ اللہ تعالیٰ اپنے نبی کو جواب بتاتا ہے کہ ان سے کہو ذرا زمین میں چل پھر کر دیکھیں کہ رسولوں کو جھوٹا جاننے والوں اور قیامت کو نہ ماننے والوں کا کیسا دردرناک حسرت ناک انجام ہوا ؟ ہلاک اور تباہ ہوگئے اور نبیوں اور ایمان والوں کو اللہ تعالیٰ نے بچالیا۔ یہ نبیوں کی سچائی کی دلیل ہے۔ پھر اپنے نبی کو تسلی دیتے ہیں کہ یہ تجھے اور میرے کلام کو جھٹلاتے ہیں لیکن تو ان پر افسوس اور رنج نہ کر۔ ان کے پیچھے اپنی جان کو روگ نہ لگا۔ یہ تیرے ساتھ جو روباہ بازیاں کر رہے ہیں اور جو چالیں چل رہے ہیں ہمیں خوب علم ہے تو بےفکر رہ۔ تجھے اور تیرے دن کو ہم عروج دینے والے ہیں۔ دنیا جہاں پر تجھے ہم بلندی دیں گے۔
