Rulings on Wiping Over a Bandage or Cast (Jabeerah) During Wudu. Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen 20/12/2025 Abu Khadeejah Abdul-Wahid Fatwa, Wudu (Ablution) Comments Off on Rulings on Wiping Over a Bandage or Cast (Jabeerah) During Wudu. Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen Rulings on Wiping Over a Bandage or Cast (Jabeerah) During Wudū What is a cast, and what is the ruling on wiping over it? Ibn ʿUthaymīn said: It is that which is placed on the area of purification out of necessity, like plaster (gypsum), a cast or a bandage. Wiping over it suffices instead of washing [the limb], and this wiping replaces tayammum; so there is no need for tayammum. Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (11/171) What is the ruling if there is a wound on the parts that require purification (wudu)? Ibn ʿUthaymīn said: If there is a wound on the parts of purification, there are levels: First level: The wound is exposed, and washing does not harm it, so washing it is [therefore] obligatory. Second level: The wound is exposed, and washing harms it, but wiping (mash) does not, so wiping is obligatory. Third level: The wound is exposed and both washing and wiping harm it, so tayammum is prescribed. Fourth level: The wound is covered with a bandage or other appropriate covering. In this level, one wipes over this cover, and it suffices instead of washing the limb, and tayammum is not required. Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (11/171) Must one combine tayammum with wiping over a cast (or bandage)? Ibn ʿUthaymīn said: It is not necessary to combine wiping and tayammum, because obligating two purifications for the same limb contradicts the principles of the Sharīʿah. Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (11/173) Must one wipe over the entire cast when wiping over it? Ibn ʿUthaymīn said: Yes, one must wipe over it entirely because wiping replaces washing, and just as washing must cover the whole limb, so must wiping cover the entire cast/bandage. Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (11/173) What is the ruling for someone with a wound who fears it will not heal? Should he wipe over the wound or perform tayammum? Shaikh Ibn Baz: The correct view is that wiping over it suffices and replaces tayammum. al-Lajnah al-Dāʾimah (5/248) If boils appear on the leg and the treatment is to cover the boil with a bandage so that water does not reach it during wudu, what is the ruling on wudu? Shaikh Ibn Bāz: Your wudu is valid if you wipe over the bandage or if water passes over it. al-Lajnah al-Dāʾimah (5/249)
